Twice now people have mentioned “Song to the Siren” by This Mortal Coil, which is very good, but I have to say I prefer it sung by the man who wrote it, Tim Buckley.

An impossible question.

Nimrod is truly wonderful as are many other Classical and operatic pieces including La Mamma Morta, Un bel di from Madame Butterfly, Jupiter by Holtz, Hymn of the Cherubim.

But there are also many more contemporary truly beautiful pieces:

"Sleep" by Godspeed you Black Emporer
"I Love you Porgy", Nina Simone
"Harlem Blues" Cynda Williams
"Song to the Siren" This mortal Coil
"The Carnival is Over" Dead can dance.

I could be here all day.

Couldn't agree more Eddie. I've been playing piano for 50 years and only came across this piece of music a couple of years ago. Can't play it without it bringing a tear to my eye.

Special mention for "Black is the Colour", preferably by Christie Moore.

Don’t know much classical music, but always liked Parsifal by Wagner. The first few minutes are amazing.

He didn't even win X-Factor - shit.

Parsifal noted. But I go for Beethoven 5th (Emperor) Concerto; the second (slow) movement. used in Picnic at Hanging Rock.
